Fast Five Review

Tonight I had the chance to watch Fast Five on opening night.  All of the local shows ended up getting sold out, so I was glad I bought my tickets early.  This one looked pretty exciting in the trailers and to be honest, I was looking forward to it.

There were some things I liked about the movie, but there were also some areas that could have been better.  First off, this movie had some of the corniest lines of any movie in recent years.  If you can get past the bad screenplay and over-the-top characters, the movie is actually fairly entertaining.  I'm really glad they managed to show the entire final scene from the last movie involving the black NSX.  The train scene was also very well done in this movie.  To really enjoy Fast Five you have to go into it thinking that no part of it will be realistic or believable.

One thing that seems to be bugging me from all of the latest movies in the definite lack of car scenes or racing scenes.  There were a few in this one, but there were more gun fights and hand to hand combat going on rather than driving cars.  One of my favorite things about the first movie was the amount of racing scenes.  In the last four movies, usually there is some "job" that the crew must do which entails a long drawn out plan and tons of action.  Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the action, I just wish there were more car scenes.  I was entertained the entire movie and felt I got my money's worth.

Overall, I would give the movie a 3 out of 5 and every car enthusiast should at the very least rent it.

PS:  Stay for the credits as there is an interesting plot twist for the series that pretty much ensures another movie in the franchise.  If you want to know what the final scene was or didn't end up staying for it see below: (Spoiler alert):

The final scene involves a woman in heels walking up to Hobbs in his office and telling him about a military convoy that has been hijacked.  The woman is Monica Fuentes, the undercover cop from 2 Fast 2 Furious.  She hands him a file and Hobbs opens it.  The camera cuts to a photo in the file and it's Letty, Dom's old girlfriend who was supposedly dead.  She is the person responsible for the hijacking of the military convoy.

It was definitely enjoyable but as you already stated kind of lacked the amount of automotive action I was hoping to see. Still the driving sequences they did include were pretty cool

Too bad to hear about the corny lines, the trailer did make it look pretty bad ass. I’ve yet to see it, may wait until it hits DVD.

It was a good movie. The rock was pretty funny in this one. I also liked the GT40, only cool car in the movie.
